Dawn of the Tarts
Hello! Step into the Tarts’ Wardrobe for some teen lit dish. Our first topic is the Twilight series and related vampire books. The Twilight books are probably the most popular thing in my library for teens and have been since this summer. Coincidentally, I also noticed many people dressed as vampires on Halloween. I saw male vampires, female vampires, vampire brides, vampire grooms, vampire princesses, and even doggie vampires. Clearly the vampire phenomenon is at a fever pitch.
Since our goal here is to be a little gossipy and irreverent, I feel comfortable admitting that I found a lot of these vampires strangely attractive. I did go through a phase where I wanted to date a vampire. Specifically, an Edwardian vampire: someone who’s chivalrous, well dressed, rich, drives a fancy car, and has infinite amounts of money. But someone who may eventually turn on you and try to suck your blood. I figure, most men will eventually turn on you (in my experience), so why not live it up while you can?
This phase ended when I thought about the vampire temperature factor. I would much rather date Jacob or any warm werewolf than Edward. I’ll take someone who can keep me warm over someone freezing any day. Bella made the wrong choice, what can I say.
Regarding the Twilight series in general, I loved the first book but thought the plot and writing went downhill from there. Still, the books raised lots of questions for me and hopefully we’ll discuss them here. How does the age of the reader impact one’s opinion of the series? What ages are these books written for anyway? What do you think of the choices Bella made, especially in Breaking Dawn? Is Bella a good role model for girls? Should she be? How much is healthy to sacrifice for love? Are you going to see the movie? How has the Twilight craze effected YA publishing?
Bridget, what do you think?
