Ideas Out of the Air by Bridget

Most writers have lists of future book ideas — maybe even notes and stuffed folders. One idea on my list was to use the Major Arcana of the Tarot for chapter headings from 0 The Fool to XX The World and to weave the story around the idea of the Tarot. Maybe someone has already done this and this wasn’t a new idea at all, but I was still shocked to discover that a book came out THIS YEAR that did just exactly what I was thinking. I discovered it at Powell’s and almost fell over when I opened to the first page and found “0 The Fool” as the chapter heading.

I turned back to the cover of the book. Not just anyone wrote this stinking book, Frank Effing Portman, author of the extremely successful King Dork, wrote this stinking book. So it will last FOREVER and never fade into obscurity so I can write MY tarot book.

Then I read the first few pages. And discovered that it might very well be quite good along with everything else.

I have accepted that ideas float in the air and if you aren’t fast enough someone else will snatch it away.

Still, a pox on you, Frank Portman!

(Okay, maybe not a POX, that is a little extreme, but certainly a little bout of the flu couldn’t hurt? Not the swine flu or anything. Maybe just the sniffles. A sniffle on you, Frank Portman, really doesn’t have much oomph. Forget it. He can just go on being brilliant and I will do nothing to stop him).

I’m so excited about the new Frank Portman book! I’ve got it on hold at the library. I’m sorry he stole your idea, the ratbag. I don’t think your idea will go to waste–you can explain to me what the Tarot stuff means, because I am already confused.
